The Alumni Steering Committee Positions are open to student, staff, and faculty alumni of JIRP. The JEDI Steering Committee’s collective responsibilities will be to read through feedback from the community, continue work the Academic Council did to build the JEDI Action Plan, and lead JIRP through the first year of this focused effort. At the end of the first year, the JEDI Steering Committee will develop a process to replace its members as needed.

We are looking for five or six program alumni (student, staff, or faculty) to serve with five members of the JIRP Leadership on the JEDI Steering Committee. We are intentionally inviting at least as many alumni as current JIRP leadership to the table to ensure that the alumni have equal say in decision making. For more information on the Steering Committee as it stands (including who has committed to serving), please see the JEDI Steering Committee page.

Interested applicants are invited to fill out the application (below) after reviewing the position description.

The application deadline is Friday, August 28, at 11:59 pm AKDT.

Responsibilities of the JEDI Steering Committee

  • Review the ‘JEDI Action Plan - First Draft’ and feedback from the JEDI Open Feedback Form from JIRP community members.

  • Update the JEDI Action Plan, using feedback as a jumping off point, and bringing in any other relevant information or experience.

  • Publish the ‘JEDI Action Plan - Second Draft’ on the JIRP website and solicit feedback from the community.

  • Finalize the JEDI Action Plan, publish a summary.

  • Meet regularly to implement action steps, evaluate progress, and continue to iterate further plans as needed.

  • Receive and manage help from the JEDI Volunteer Corps as needed for accomplishing tasks that can benefit from multiple sets of hands.

  • Develop an equitable process to keep JEDI Steering Committee efforts moving forward in future years.

Decision Criteria

In choosing the first alumni appointed to the JEDI Steering Committee, we are considering the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to JIRP’s mission of growth in Earth Science education and research.

  • Prioritizing the voices of Black and Indigenous people, People of Color more generally, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

  • Diversity of JIRP experience (years participated and roles held).

  • Diversity of academic and career experience (years, fields, and type of academic/professional institution).

  • Previous personal and professional experience in similar or related work.

Time Commitment and Compensation

  • Compensation will be $200-$500 annually as a volunteer stipend. Almost all work at JIRP is done by uncompensated volunteers. We realize, however, that work to improve JEDI is traditionally far under-compensated in the U.S. We will be providing modest annual stipends to alumni participants for their work. This is far less than the work is worth, but it is what we’re able to provide. The final amount will be dependent on how many alumni are on the JEDI Steering Committee. Only the alumni on the Steering Committee will receive this compensation; the JIRP leadership members of the Steering Committee will do the work without compensation above what (if anything) they already receive.

  • The initial members of the JEDI Steering Committee will serve for approximately one year, from September 2020 to September 2021.

  • September - December 2020 the JEDI Steering Committee to meet every 1-2 weeks to achieve their initial goals.

  • January - September 2021 the JEDI Steering Committee to meet every 2-4 weeks, or as needed to achieve their annual goals.
